Bee hives need not be disturbed during the colder months. Provided they are well prepared they will survive until Spring.
Check the queen to see that she is performing well. If she is failing kill her and unite the colony with another healthy one above a sheet of newspaper.
Check all brood combs for disease, particularly AFB.
The point has been made before that beekeepers should modify their practices now that hive beetles are here. When doing any major hive manipulations like this, or making up nuclei hives, here are some suggested dos (and don’ts).
Our apiary is full of working examples that different beekeeping methods are rewarding, each in its own way. For close to two decades our Langstroth Hives made and run by Anthony have given the club great service and now we have a new arrival in our apiary. Hand made by Torsten, the Warré Hive moved in on Saturday 18th February. It has a home now next to the Flow Hive (organised by Miskell) in line with the Top-Bar Hive built and on loan by Maher.
